Short Course on Introduction to Ocean Dynamics with practical hands-on exercises
during 18-29 August 2025
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean)
INCOIS, Hyderabad, India.

Overview:

This course provides a foundation and in-depth insight into physical oceanography, with a special emphasis on the Indian Ocean region. It is ideal for individuals passionate about ocean science and keen to explore the air-sea processes shaping our oceans. Through a combination of theoretical lectures and hands-on tutorials, the course introduces core oceanographic principles, including ocean circulation, seawater properties, air-sea interactions, and climate variability. The content is specially designed to enhance understanding through real-world context, satellite observations, and practical exercises relevant to regional and global ocean dynamics.

Aims and objectives:

  • Introduce fundamental concepts of physical oceanography with a focus on the Indian Ocean.
  • Explain the thermohaline structure and properties of seawater and how they influence ocean dynamics.
  • Describe the mechanisms behind global and regional ocean circulation patterns.
  • Explore air-sea interactions and their role in regulating the upper ocean heat and salt budget.
  • Provide insights into climate variability, including natural and anthropogenic influences on the ocean.
  • Reinforce theoretical knowledge through practical, hands-on exercises and tutorials.
  • Learning Outcomes:

    • Understand key physical properties of seawater and their role in water mass formation.
    • Explain the principles behind ocean circulation and relate them to Indian Ocean dynamics.
    • Analyze air-sea interactions and evaluate their impact on ocean temperatures and salinity.
    • Identify and interpret patterns of climate variability and human-induced changes in the ocean.
    • Gain proficiency in using tools and techniques for practical oceanographic analysis.
    • Target Audience:
