during 02-06 September 2024
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean)
INCOIS, Hyderabad, India.

Overview:

This training course provides an in-depth understanding of the science, technology, and operational aspects of early warning systems (EWS) for tsunamis and other ocean-related hazards. It aims to strengthen the technical capacity of participants in hazard monitoring, risk assessment, forecasting, and dissemination of warnings. The course combines expert lectures with practical hands-on sessions and real-time simulation exercises.

Aims and objectives:

  • To provide comprehensive knowledge of tsunamis and other ocean-related hazards such as storm surges and swells.
  • To introduce participants to early warning frameworks, modeling techniques, and communication strategies.
  • To train participants in the use of observational platforms, numerical models, GIS, and decision-support systems.
  • To strengthen national and regional coordination for disaster risk reduction and preparedness.
  • Learning Outcomes:

    • Understand the scientific principles behind tsunamis, storm surges, swells, and other ocean-related hazards.
    • Apply knowledge of early warning system (EWS) frameworks for effective hazard detection and response.
    • Design and evaluate warning dissemination strategies to reach at-risk populations effectively.
    • Conduct risk assessments and simulate real-time emergency scenarios to test preparedness levels.
    • Collaborate with national and regional agencies to improve coordination and communication during marine hazard events.
    • Contribute to strengthening institutional capacity for disaster risk reduction and community resilience.
