"Wave Modelling & Applications"
during 11-15 August, 2025
Organized by
International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean)
INCOIS, Hyderabad, India.

Overview:

The short course on "Wave Modelling & Applications", scheduled from 11th to 15th August 2025, aims to provide comprehensive training on the theoretical foundations, numerical techniques, and practical applications of wave modelling in oceanographic studies and operational services. Through expert lectures, hands-on sessions, and real-case studies, participants will gain insights into state-of-the-art spectral wave models like WAVEWATCH III, wave model forcing, validation techniques, and operational forecasting frameworks. Emphasis will also be given to the practical applications of wave models in enhancing marine safety, supporting coastal infrastructure design, and assessing the impacts of climate variability and change.

Aims and objectives:

  • To introduce the fundamental principles of wind-generated ocean waves and their dynamics.
  • To train participants in the setup, execution, and validation of numerical wave models.
  • To understand the role of atmospheric forcing, bathymetry, and boundary conditions in wave modelling.
  • To familiarize participants with satellite and in-situ wave observations and their integration in model validation.
  • To explore applications of wave models in real-world scenarios including tropical cyclones, wave induced inundation, and wave energy.
  • To encourage interdisciplinary use of wave model outputs in operational forecasting and marine spatial planning.
  • Learning Outcomes:

    • Understand the physical processes driving wave generation and propagation.
    • Configure and run spectral wave models (e.g., WAVEWATCH III) for regional and coastal domains.
    • Analyze model outputs and compare with observational datasets (e.g., buoys, altimeters).
    • Apply wave modelling techniques to real-time forecasting, hazard assessment, and coastal applications.
    • Interpret wave model results for decision-making in marine and coastal operations.
    • Develop basic skills in scripting, data visualization, and automation of model workflows.
    • Programme Dates:

      11-15 August, 2025

      Target Audience:

Students, early-career researchers, and professionals engaged in ocean modelling, marine forecasting, and coastal engineering.
